Slipknot
Slipknot is an American heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. Slipknot’s current band members are Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor. They are recognized as one of the pioneering bands in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
The band formed in late 1995 and underwent several line-up changes following the independent release of their debut album, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. in 1996. Their debut self-titled studio album, Slipknot, was released in 1999 and was followed by two further studio albums, Iowa in 2001 and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in 2004. They are expected to release their fourth studio album, All Hope Is Gone, on August 25, 2008.
Slipknot seems to get themselves into the headlines for all the wrong reasons and the lyrics of their song Disasterpiece doesn’t help. On 23 may 2003 Jason Lamar Harris and Amber Rose Riley killed their friend Terry Ray Taylor listening to a Slipknot CD before and after the murder.
Today a kid from Krugersdorp North killed another kid at school apparently dressed as Joey Jordison, Slipknot’s drummer. The kid claimed “Satan Made him do it”. See IOL for details.
Unfortunately the knee jerk reactions against Heavy Metal are going to be all over the media in South Africa instead of looking at what really drives a child to commit murder. It is time for parents and teachers to take responsibility. I’m sure the signs of this Krugersdorp kid having real problems were there long before he decided to chop his friends neck off with a sword.
Heavy Metal or for that matter any music does not cause people to commit murder. I wonder how many of the people who are going to condemn Heavy Metal in the next few days listen to the Beatles? I hope they don’t forget that the evil music of the Beatles “inspired” Charles Manson and his “family” to commit mass murder.
